Cameron Boyce celebrates 'incredible' civil rights pioneer grandmother in final on-camera interview

Cameron Boyce had a very special relationship with his grandmother Jo Ann Boyce, 91, who was one of the first Black students to attend a South African integrated high school in 1956, known as Clinton Twelve. EW has a special video of Paradise City star in his last camera interview with costar Matt Pinfield where he opened up about the impact his daughter has had on her life. Boyce died on July 6, 2019, at the age of 20 from epilepsy. Her proud parents Libby and Victor Boyce are also thinking about Cameron's life for what would be his 22nd birthday. "By getting that idea from his grandmother, Cameron was very passionate about human rights and doing well with people," Victor, Cameron's father and Jo Ann's son, told EW only. "The stories my mother told her hit her hard, especially because she was black and Jewish. Her level of empathy was not on the charts. Instead of, 'I'm poor,' she decided to do something about it. She was encouraged to take action for my mother and one of her grandmothers. to fight for the truth. " Adds Libby, "Jo Ann Boyce is an amazingly special person and has that magical touch that everyone feels like Cameron has. They have shared a very special connection, which I can't even say." The interview was shot in support of the series Paradise City, in which he featured up-and-coming artist Simon Ostergaard in what would be his last appearance on screen. Cameron recalled conference series builder Ash Avildsen before the start of the shoot and how they both shared a unique experience with the horn. Shortly after the actor's death, his mother also had the Hawks cross her path. “That part of the video touched me deeply,” Libby said. "I'm not very spiritual, to be honest, but just after Cameron's passing, I walked to Franklin Canyon just to get out and the hawk came down and hit me on the head and went on. I just broke down and went into the mountain climbing. So when I saw a clip of this conversation you shared, it made my hair stand on end. It relieved me a little. " He adds Victor, "I am not very religious but I am spiritual. Cameron was very precious and had a deep understanding of the universe, more than anyone I have ever met. And that had nothing to do with me or his mother, he I came out like that. how people all over the world so deeply. Many he has never met. I will never fully understand it but I really appreciate it. " The Boyce family continues to share Cameron's magic with the world through the Cameron Boyce Foundation which focuses on ending gun violence and treating epilepsy. "We established this foundation a few days ago Cameron because we didn't think his career would end and it was a way for us to deal with it," Libby said. "We are working to treat epilepsy and, if not, we are pushing for more effective treatment. As Cameron's custodians, we use his voice and his platform to pay close attention to epilepsy. Most people know someone who has epilepsy. as a result. So we are raising money and creating awareness as our goal. " Victor adds, "I wish the Cameron Boyce Foundation did not exist because that would mean that Cameron would still be alive. But because this happened and I could not escape real life, this situation forced me into a position I never wanted but had an impact. In that sense, it was amazing. I never thought I would be a part. It's something that makes a huge difference in so many lives. Libby and I have met so many parents with the same situation as us and at the club I wish I wasn't but I am. So our intention is to do something good with something terrible. "
